Jim Conboy was born in  Philadelphia.  He studied art at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia.   Jim moved to New York in 1983 and settled in the East Village, where he still lives and works.

He immersed himself in abstract paintings that portrayed the energy of 1980’s New York City – a city struggling to recover from the 1970’s bankruptcy.  Jim found a synergy with his own powerful abstractions.  He used found objects to trace colliding abstract forms onto brilliantly colored canvases.

Jim still uses found objects – mostly styrofoam – to create monoprints.  He inks the surface of the styrofoam – discarded packing material – and presses the image onto paper.  He also applies paint to the styrofoam forms to create free standing sculptures.  Jim has also begun coaxing images from limestone, marble or wood walls to create wall drawings.

Most recently Jim has returned to painting on canvas.  He calls these collaborations.  He has begun using discarded canvas by deceased artist Rowell Bowels.  Jim coaxes found “portraits” he finds seem to be hidden in Rowell’s paintings.

In 1992 Jim began Creative Crating Inc., and Fine Art Services and Transport, with partner Arie DeVries.  Arie has retired and Jim runs both business in Long Island City, NY.
